The system was developed by the Building Research Establishment (bre) and made public under the name BREEAM. In 2012, the National Scheme Operator DIFNI (the German Private Institute for Sustainable Real Estate Industry) carried out an adaptation of the system for the German-speaking market – initially limited to non-residential buildings – and designated this as BREEAM DE In Use. The certification takes place in up to three parts (Part 1 Building, Part 2 Operation and Part 3 User), which could be examined further. The real estate is assessed in the following 9 categories:
